Moon Sign Calculator: Your Exact Degree, Even If It Changed That Day
You get your moon sign to the exact degree. And if the Moon changed signs on your birthday, you get the exact minute it switched — so you know which side you fall on.
What is a moon sign?
Your moon sign is the zodiac sign the Moon occupied at the moment you were born. It describes your emotional instincts and what you need to feel safe — the half of your chart your Sun sign leaves out. The Moon moves through a sign in about two and a half days, so a birth a few hours either way can land in a different sign.
How we find your moon sign
The Moon moves about thirteen degrees a day. A sign is thirty degrees wide, so the Moon spends roughly two and a half days in each one. A birth a few hours either way can land in a different sign.
So we do not guess. We take the moment you were born and convert it to universal time, using the time zone your birthplace was on that date. Then we read the Moon's longitude at that instant. Your sign is the thirty-degree slice that longitude falls in.
If you do not know your birth time, we do not need it. We keep a table of every moment the Moon changes sign, built from a published ephemeris and checked against a second one. Your birth date falls between two of them, and that is your sign, with the switch to the minute when one lands on your day.
What each Moon needs
| Moon in | What it needs | How it looks from outside |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | to act on the feeling now | a quick temper and a quick recovery |
| Taurus | the same bed, the same food, no surprises | calm, until you move something |
| Gemini | to say it out loud to find out what it is | talking the problem through twice |
| Cancer | to be needed by someone at home | feeding people who did not ask |
| Leo | the feeling to be witnessed | warmth, and a sulk when ignored |
| Virgo | the small thing fixed before the big one can be | tidying up during an argument |
| Libra | the room to be at peace | agreeing first and resenting later |
| Scorpio | to know what is really going on | a silence that is not empty |
| Sagittarius | the door left unlocked | leaving before it gets heavy |
| Capricorn | to be the one holding it together | coping, alone |
| Aquarius | distance before it can come close | stepping back when it matters most |
| Pisces | to feel it without being asked to explain | absorbing everyone else's mood |
What your Moon answers that your Sun does not
Your Sun sign is the one you give at a party. It is the story you tell about yourself, and most people can name it.
Your Moon is smaller and closer. Astrologers read it as what you need rather than what you want, and it shows up when you are tired, or safe, or upset. That is why the people who live with you know it better than the people who work with you.
We are not going to claim it predicts anything. It is one placement, read the same way for a very long time, and it is worth knowing.
Questions people ask
- What does your moon sign mean?
- It describes what you need to feel safe, and how you react when you do not get it. Your Sun sign is the self you show. Your Moon is the one that turns up when you are tired, hurt or at home. Astrologers read it as instinct rather than choice.
- Can I find my moon sign without a birth time?
- Usually, yes. The Moon stays in each sign for about two and a half days, so most birth dates fall inside one sign from start to finish. If it changed signs on your birthday, the calculator gives the exact minute it switched, so you can see which side you fall on.
- What is the difference between my sun, moon and rising sign?
- Your Sun spends about a month in each sign. Your Moon changes sign every two to three days. Your rising sign changes about every two hours on average, which is why it needs a birth time. Put simply, the Sun is what you aim for, the Moon what you need, and the rising sign how you come across.
- How do I find my moon and rising sign together?
- The rising sign calculator gives you both, plus your Sun, from one entry of your birth date, time and place. This page works without a birth time, which a rising sign cannot.
- Why does another site give me a different moon sign?
- Almost always because the Moon changed signs on your birthday. A site that ignores your birth time, or reads the wrong time zone, can land on the wrong side of the switch. We convert your birth time with the time zone rule of that date, then compare it with the minute of the switch.
- Is my moon sign more important than my sun sign?
- Neither is more important. They answer different questions. Some people recognize themselves more in their Moon, because it covers private life, which a Sun sign column rarely touches. Read together, the two say more than either one alone.
- How often does the Moon change signs?
- About every two and a half days. It crosses all twelve signs in a little over twenty-seven days, so it changes sign roughly thirteen times a month. That speed is why the day of your birth matters so much, and sometimes the hour.
Nobody meets your Moon. They meet what you do about it.
