How is a life path number calculated?
Your life path number comes from your full birth date. Reduce the month, the day and the year to single digits, add the three, and reduce again. The master numbers 11, 22 and 33 are kept whole at every step. Adding all the digits in one line is a second method, and on some dates it lands on a different number.
How to calculate your life path number
Take your birth date in three parts. Reduce each part to a single digit, unless it lands on 11, 22 or 33. Then add the three results and reduce again, with the same exception.
For July 14, 1988, the month is 7. The day, 14, becomes 1 plus 4, which is 5. The year, 1988, adds up to 26, then 8. Seven plus five plus eight is 20, and 20 reduces to 2. That is the life path number.
Why two methods can give two answers
Some calculators add every digit of the date in one line instead. For July 14, 1988, that line is 7, 1, 4, 1, 9, 8 and 8, which makes 38, then 11. Same date, a master number instead of a two.
The gap only opens when one of the answers is a master number, so two single digits never clash. Across every date from 1900 to 2025, the methods disagree on 13.9% of them. When they disagree for you, this calculator shows both, with the arithmetic for each.

- What is the difference between a life path number and an angel number?
- On this site, both come from your birth date. Your angel number adds every digit in one line. Your life path number reduces the month, the day and the year first. Most dates give the same answer both ways, and the calculator tells you when yours does not.
- Why are 11, 22 and 33 not reduced?
- The tradition treats them as master numbers, with a meaning of their own. Reduce eleven to two and you lose that reading. We keep them whole at every step, in the month, the day, the year and the total.
